Alopecia areata
• Reviewed the pattern and duration of hair loss, scalp symptoms, hair care and styles, medications, diet, recent illness or stress, and family history
• No scalp scaling, black dots, swollen glands at the back of the neck, or scarring
• Observation, since small patches of alopecia areata often regrow on their own
• Follow up in 3 months to check regrowth

Alopecia areata happens when the immune system targets the hair follicles; it is not contagious and usually does not affect overall health. Small patches often regrow within months, though new patches can appear and regrowing hair may come in white at first. Hair loss can be upsetting, so teasing or worry about appearance are worth talking about. Caregiver expressed understanding and agreement with plan. Answered all questions.
