Repertoire stores reusable wording as Templates and Building Blocks. Use a Template for a recognizable workflow. Use a Building Block for one smaller item that can stand alone or be shared.
All built-in examples are starting points, not clinical advice or recommendations. Use only patient-independent wording, formally review and approve all content before use, and complete patient-specific documentation in your approved EMR.
Choose the object
| Use a clinical Template when… | Use a Building Block when… |
|---|---|
| The item represents a diagnosis, complaint, visit type, or other recognizable workflow. | The item is useful across several workflows or on its own. |
| Several related sections or choices belong together. | One statement, paragraph, inline choice, or option set has one clear purpose. |
| You want controls to remain attached to one generated problem. | You want one maintained source that can be inserted or linked in several places. |
If the user believes they are adding “the structure for this workflow,” start with a Template. If they are adding “this one maintained detail,” start with a Building Block.
Create a Template
- Open Menu → Browse Templates, then select New template.
- Give the Template a precise name and category.
- Add only specific recognition aliases.
- Build the needed options, narratives, inline choices, and reminders.
- Keep encounter-dependent choices off by default.
- Preview the output, save, and review the Template.
For a fuller walkthrough, use How to Customize and Reuse Clinical Note Templates.
Create a Building Block
- Open Menu → Browse Building Blocks.
- Choose Create building block.
- Give it a clear name and specific aliases.
- Choose the smallest content type that fits:
- Statement for one fixed sentence
- Narrative block for a short paragraph
- Inline choice for one value inside a sentence
- Option set for several selectable statements; choose one-selection-only or a multi-selection output layout
- Dynamic choice for a Template-linked sentence that reuses fill-ins such as current and new medications
- Add a collection or tags if they help browsing.
- Set a default only when automatic insertion is intentional.
- Preview every choice, save, and review the item.
Dynamic choices are linked through Template Studio rather than inserted as standalone snippets. Use the dynamic Building Block walkthrough to see the ADHD medication example and build one of your own.
Insert a Building Block
You can use a Building Block in several ways:
- select a favorite under Common visit details
- find it with workspace search or Browse Building Blocks
- type a dot phrase and choose the completed result
- type an eligible name or alias on its own line
- include it in a Repertoire Line
For example:
AOM: right; supportive care; interpreter: Spanish
Select to resolve only the Templates, Building Blocks, and choices currently maintained in the library. Use /r, the keyboard shortcut, or select generic text, right-click, and choose Resolve. After resolution, Help appears to the left of Undo, and the details control on the right explains the exact result.
Link a Building Block into a Template
Use a link when the same maintained item should appear in several Templates:
- Open the Template in Template Studio.
- Choose Browse Building Blocks.
- Select the item to attach it as a linked section.
- Save and review the Template.
Updating the Building Block changes future uses of linked Templates. It does not rewrite text already inserted into a note.
If one Template needs different wording, detach the linked section or choose Save as separate. This preserves the current wording and ends the shared update relationship.
Review and back up the result
Before use:
- Open Menu → Library Review → Building Blocks and review the exact Template and Building Block output.
- Check defaults, aliases, choices, and every linked use.
- Resolve or document remaining Library Health findings.
- Complete the required clinical, organizational, privacy, security, legal, and IT approval process.
- Export a workspace backup after meaningful changes.
Next, return to Getting Started with Repertoire, learn how to review the library, or make aliases easier to find. You can also open the Repertoire workspace, review the privacy and data-practices notice, or browse all Repertoire guides.
